A Rant and Some Danish Delight

I may have mentioned here and there that at the current fuckin’ moment I’m not in the ice-cold Netherlands. I’m on vacation for a short week. To Copenhagen, Denmark, where it’s nice and boiling hot… Not really, but it still is an awesome city I’ve been told. It’s also inside the Metal Mekka that’s called Scandinavia!

I doubt I’ll be visiting any concerts – my girlfriend’s not a fan and this is a trip for two – but what I can do is make sure that you at least enjoy a good portion of Danish Delight. My favorite band of Great Danes is called Mnemic, so they’ll take the honors.

There’s also a bit of a rant there, because frankly, some people need some sense talked into them.

Encyclopaedia Metallum is usually a great place for getting basic band info, such as founding dates, band members, discographies, etc. Their collection of bands is massive. You would think that the great Danish Industrial Metallers of Mnemic would feature on the site. Well they used to, but some half-wit decided they aren’t Metal (thanks to Rufio for pointing that out!).

WHAT. THE. FUCK. I always though, and I quote, Heavy Metal is characterized by “a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, emphatic beats, and overall loudness”. Now, press play on Mnemic’s Diesel Uterus, and tell me if it matches those characteristics or not.

It seems Encylopaedia Metallum has been hijacked by the typical idiocy that is so omni-present in the world of Metal: the lack of openness to something innovative and everybody knowing everything better, but completely missing the point of Metal!

Metal isn’t about vocal style. None of the early bands had grunting, screaming or otherwise harsh vocals. That’s something that grew into the scene and it’s great. It’s not like it’s the new truth though. Metal also isn’t about lacking melody and consisting only of thick monotonous riffs.

Instead, Metal is about quality, about being superficially loud but deeply refined, about being different, about being yourself and about not giving a hairy fuck! Mnemic is all of that. Thick sound, innovative and syncopatic riffs, layered, refined but loud. So let me fuckin’ put it to you bluntly: MNEMIC IS FUCKIN’ METAL! Screw the self-proclaimed Metal Gestapo!

That said, let’s enjoy this awesome piece of Denmark for what it’s worth! Diesel Uterus is from the band’s 2010 Sons of the System album, which is their fourth album.

Some bands blur the line between rock and metal, while some bands evolve into something else, sometimes into metal, sometimes away from metal.

At any rate, everything I’ve heard from Mnemic tells me that they’re a metal band. I didn’t have to play “Diesel Uterus” to find that out (but I did play it anyway).

I just bought their CD here in Denmark. Where else better to buy it than the place where it’s been bred. I look forward to play it loud on my way to work Monday. Should be a decent album, from the few songs I have heard off it.
