Byrd’s Ten Favorite 2011 Freebies (Part 5)
Ha! I just this moment realised that with these last two inclusions the little freebie list is split with a five-to-five mix of LPs and EPs. How did I not notice that? Anyway, these are my top two favorite freebies of the year and they both happen to have been introduced to me by TNOTB.
The list so far:
10. – Savage Messiah – A Plague of Conscience
09. – Blastanus – Collapse
08. – Meankind – 22.Zero
07. – The Apocryphal Order – S/T
06. – Incise – From the Crypts They Rise
05. – Immolation – Providence
04. – Ära Krâ – Ferne Tage
03. – Oak Pantheon – The Void
02. – Apocryphon – S/T

This self-titled EP from San Francisco’s Apocryphon found me through a Free Shit post at TNOTB. This is the type of ugly fuckin’ Death Metal stirred with just enough grind tendencies that I love. I hesitate to call it Old-school but there’s something about the vibe that takes me back to the early ’90s. Perhaps its that these guys are just real good students of the old school.
Name your price at Bandcamp or pick it up at Mediafire. Apocryphon can be found on Facebook here.
01. – Aurora Borealis – Timeline: The Beginning and End of Everything

This post at TNOTB drew my attention to these guys and inspired this post here at The Baboon way back in March. This onslaught of Blackened Death Metal has kept me comin’ back time and time again. There are two songs in our previous post and here’s a third sample of the savagery with Tearing Holes in the Fabric of Time.
You can get Timeline at the Aurora Borealis site and find them on Facebook here.
Well, that’s a wrap on my favorite freebies of this year. I hope you found something you like out of them and if you know of some killer free stuff we may have missed let us know in the comments.

For anyone that enjoys the Aurora Borealis album…
If you take a minute and poke around their website (or, you can just cheat and follow this link- http://www.auroraborealis.org/html/downloads.html ) they have several more full-lengths to download for free.
I’ve gotten all of these a while ago and heard them all. The style and quality of the music stays pretty consistent, so if you liked Timeline, you’ll probably want to check out the rest of these.

Thanks for mentioning that, Valley Of Steel. I meant to include that info and forgot.

I have to give you some props Byrd, I don’t even come to having ten favourite freebies. I’m only coming to five hahaha.

Thanks for the props. I spend a fair amount of time stalking the internet for freebies. I was a little surprised when I realised that these ten favorites were all found between here, NCS and TNOTB, with the exception of Immolation who were featured all over the place, I don’t even have a clue where I heard about that first.

I used to be looking for freebies everywhere, so I have quite a few from other years, but I kind of quit when my library started to become kinda full and I couldn’t fit them on my ipod anymore

It’s very difficult to decide what gets cut from the ipod, so I can understand the situation. That said, I make that struggle every couple of months. It’s like self torture but I’m usually surprised at how little I miss what doesn’t make the cut. That and there’s always a CD for the odd spin once in a while.

Haha, true. I’d like to have access to anything, so i can listen to anything anytime I like, but yeah with 16 gigs, that’s not going to work out

Have you guys tried looking into one of those cloud things, like Google Music or the Amazon Cloud? The way I understand it, anything you download to your computer or phone can be synched with an online storage, so then you can stream from there from any device (without being limited by the storage space of the device).
I guess you need to be connected to the internet to stream though, so it would work for a smartphone or tablet, but probably not so much for an ipod. So I dunno if that would really solve your problem. Personally, I carry my netbook to work with me- and listen to music from there all day, so it’s basically an overgrown mp3 player

I think the cloud players will be something I’ll eventually get into, but working on construction sites in areas with sketchy wireless signals means it’ll be quite a while.

Once technology allows us to use those on smart phones and shit, I think those cloud players are going to become really really big. Just a matter of time.
