Heavy Metal from the 17th Century

And now for something completely different…

Last Sunday I visited my parents – as an amazing son you have to do that every once in a while – in the east of the Netherlands. Now, many many years ago, about 400 to be more precise, there were Spanish in the area around the city of Grolle, which is now called Groenlo. They occupied it, and they weren’t invited, if you know what I mean.

And now for something completely different…

Something different indeed. Those of you who know me a bit better know that besides metal, I have another great passion, which is cars and racing. I was out during the weekend, and I had good reason to! Namely, I went to the “Pinkster Races” at the Zandvoort race track in the Netherlands. And I’ve got some nice pics to show for it. Top class of the day was the Dutch GT4 Championship of which you can see some Beemers, Porsches, Corvettes, etc. But the cherry on top was the fact that I got to ride shotgun on a BMW 325i Drift racer!

Thanks to Maris for making most of the pictures and letting me use her camera for the rest!

System of a Down – Toxicity (Covers)

Mon, 10/05/2010

I remember something like ten years ago System of a Down was stuff played on commercial radio and I listened to the stuff. (It was before I got into Death Metal.) Toxicity will probably be known to all of you. Jonas found two cool covers of the song. First one is on the piano (it’s a keyboard really but fuck it). Second is by three chicks playing electric violin and drums.

Thanks Jonas!

Van Canto – Battery (Metallica Cover)

Wed, 28/04/2010

I’m gonna go ahead and just say it. This is a bit weird. It’s also quite astonishing. Germany’s Van Canto makes metal with five singers and a drummer. The end result sounds surprisingly much like an actual metal band.

Thanking Kebabhasse!

Lost Soul – Recording Immerse in Infinity

Sat, 30/01/2010

Polish technical Death Metal band Lost Soul has just released its new studio album Immerse in Infininty in 2009. Instead of just playing a track off that album I’ll do something different for a change. The band made a great report video of their recording period, in which they show us that best metal is created using large quantities of beer, Whiskey and garlic.

Kudos for finding this to Luke!

Apocalyptica – Somewhere Around Nothing

Mon, 18/01/2010

I’ll bet you’ll be sure to hear guitars in this track. You’re wrong! There’s only two types of instruments you hear: drums and cellos. Four of them. And still it’s unambiguously metal. Listen to a beautiful piece of music called Somewhere Around Nothing.
