Conan

As I promised you all, we have some Doom Metal to digest, and today’s subject is Conan. The first time I ever ‘did’ a Doom Metal band was with Subterranean Disposition, a project I really liked for its diversity. Apart from this however, I’ve had no experience with the legendary DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM Metal, which makes it all the more interesting.

However, Conan is completely different from the stuff Subterranean Disposition makes. The guys claim to be “as heavy as interplanetary thunder amplified through the roaring black hole anus of Azathoth.” which is quite a claim. I’ve listened to their EP for some time, and I must say, these guys are heavy. Heavier than anything I’ve hear before. However, before you make the jump, make sure you’re connected to some good speakers.

As you will probably experience now, they only sound really heavy when you have some heavy duty loudspeakers. This is simply to let their heaviness get out, because with earphones, it just sounds like some hyper-overdriven guitars.
However, even with earphones, their music is quite an interesting thing to listen to. The guitars form a big, fat, muddy layer over the rest of the music. Underneath this thick, warm blanket, some pleasant sounding drums keep the rhythm, while the vocals are quite resembling the sonar of a whale. That’s a bit of an odd combination, but it works quite well. Their EP Horseback Battle Hammer sounds thick and warm, but at the same time it hits you like, yeah, like a battle hammer.

I think I can describe Conan’s music best, by saying that their music feels like you’ve just had a massive blow with a war hammer, and now you lie on the ground, which is wet from the rain, while you can’t feel anything.

With this article I’ll get you Dying Giant, my favourite song of the EP. It’s a song of intermediate length, with a more atmospheric feel and it has a bit more texture to it. It’s more expressive, almost like the blues, which I really like.

For some reason I had some trouble finding their facebook but after I consulted Rebecca Laverty, who runs Pioneer Music Press, the lads were treated with another ‘like’.
Also, the lads are playing the Dutch Roadburn Festival next year, so if you’re interested I suggest you get some tickets.

Sweet. Even though I failed to take your advice, and only heard it on the crappy built-in speaker of my phone, I can tell this is right up my alley. Thanks for sharing!

My experience is kinda opposite. I checked it out through laptop speakers first and was kinda bored. But now, at home and through some proper kit, it’s like the music’s suddenly getting meters of depth. Which is an achievement considering how little there actually is at any time. Great recording!

I agree, and I think this is what attracts me the most to this style: although there may only be (for example) one sustained guitar chord and a few drum hits at a certain time, it still manages to sound so hug.e and full. I think this is the definition of “heavy”.

    don’t understand it …

I didn’t either at first. It kind of needs to settle.
