Demo Review: Devil’s Note – Demo 2010

Artist: Devil’s Note (Poland)
Album: Demo 2010
Genre: Melodic Death Metal

OK, I’ll be honest. When Jakub ‘Sandman’ Nadolski sent us a message I wasn’t overly thrilled, expecting nothing but another group of average noise makers. You know, some mediocre drumming, couple of power chords, bass doing the exact same and someone violently screaming into a microphone. The basic recipe of most bands, but some just throw all the shit into a band and set the stove on burn.

Surprisingly, not Devil’s Note though. The five songs on the demo sound pretty fuckin’ grown up, especially considering this is “merely” a demo. Sure, it’s all a bit raw, could use a polish in more than a few places, lacks in depth a bit. But that are just mixing and mastering issues. The musical basis is pretty sweet ‘n’ tasty.

The song structures on this demo remind me of Thrash; 4x riff A, 4x riff B, 4x riff C, 4x riff B, bridge, 4x riff C, etc., etc., but this stuff sounds nothing like Thrash at all. Demo 2010 – can I get a ‘wow’ for the title’s originality? – spans up nearly 20 minutes of quick ‘n’ dirty Death Metal. It’s mostly harsh and cathartic, slightly old school, in feel, though there’s much more melody to be enjoyed. Melody that comes in fast bursts and repeated loops.

Because we always try to include a song, we also do that today. Simple. I picked Slutery, which I’m sure should be Sluttery because that saved us from having to upload a song myself. But, it’s also a pretty cool song, with riffs more towards the Metalcore end of the Extreme Metal spectrum – purists will say Metalcore isn’t actually in the Metal spectrum, but I say fuck purists, they should get a hobby.

If you pay attention to it, you’ll also notice shards of the evilness of Black Metal sticking its head up through the cascade of Death Metal brutality. And short guitar solos. Not long or quick as farts in the wind, but skillfully and carefully played nonetheless. In short, there’s quite a varied pallet on offer and I’m looking forward to the band’s next step up. When these guys continue developing their own style there’ll be some truly majestic riffage on display.
