Destrage – Jade’s Place
I got onto this one through the band’s record label’s mailing list and didn’t want to withhold this from you. Destrage is an Italian Death Metal band from Milan and we featured them on The Baboon a couple times before. The King Is Fat’N’Old is their second full-length album and they released it at the beginning of this month. I haven’t heard much of it yet, but what I have heard and read about it sounds really good!
Some bloke calling himself “The Jack Stupid” directed the band’s video clip for their song Jade’s Place and it truly is an absolute masterpiece! Originality in abundance and it’s also batshit crazy!

Musically it’s not as loud as their previous album. It may be that it’s just this one track that’s a bit “softer”, though “softer” isn’t actually the right word, as this stuff is filthy rich with content. Loads of licks, riffs, fills, little grooves and what not. I have a feeling guitarist Ralph Salati is debit to a large part of that. We’ve seen his musical talents on display before.
Something else is good about this song too: a guest musician. Who that is? Mattias IA Eklundh. If you’ve ever consciously heard his music you would have recognized his play even without me telling you. The Swede is one of the most creative metal guitarists I know and his solos are somewhere in between freaky and beautiful.
All in all, and I’m not exaggerating, I have to say this is one of the best, most original things I’ve discovered in a while! More about the band here.

Ummm…
Brain hurt now.
I’m not quite sure what I just saw, but I think it was like watching a cross between videos by Peter Gabriel and whatever boy band is still relevant today. With guitar solos. But the bit from the point of view of the singer’s mouth?
I think I need a drink now. Maybe that’s the problem, I don’t drink very often. I wonder it it would have helped.
Other than that, the song’s decent, but the visuals that accompanied my first taste of the band could have some long standing effects.

Drinking’s always a good experience when you’re listening to metal. I find that the good sort becomes much more story-like. I guess I somehow understand it better. Of course there is a point, after about half a dozen whisky when that’s no longer true.
