Destrage – Neverending Mary
This one popped up in my inbox recently and instantly appealed to my Metallic tastes for crunchy rich audible violence that’s also highly melodic. Destrage is not a new Metal monkey here at The Baboon, but they do keep coming up with crafty songs that I just really fuckin’ like. A groove-rich, melody-wealthy sound is a cause of that, but the main thing is an unmistakable originality in song-writing and performance. The second single off their 2010 album is called Neverending Mary and it’s found embedded in this post.
The Milanese band formed back in 2002 and released its second album, titled The King is Fat ‘n’ Old in October 2010. Jade’s Place was the first single, that we featured back in October. Not all of you may have liked that one, as it was slightly freaky and also a little on the softer side, but then this new one might be in the market a little better. I for one quite like its awesome guitar work!

Don’t let the intro put you off. It’s acoustic (despite the vid showing it played on an electric guitar) and way too soft. Kind of homosexual really, but no worries, it’s just a short-lasting façade, as the game quickly shifts to riff-tastic Metal with the intensity of getting an un-anaesthetized circumcision at age 25 while being onboard an aircraft experiencing some heavy fuckin’ turbulence (I assume at least). There’s a melodic, cleanly-sung chorus, and there’s room for more melodic singing towards the end of the song. However, in my view, the main role is for the alternating melodic and rock ‘n’ roll grooving guitar leads and riffs and a Freak Guitar-type guitar solo, as if played by Mattias IA Eklundh himself (maybe he has, they chartered him for Jade’s Place too, so why the hell not?!).
The guitar work by Destrage has never let me down, so if you’re a guitar nutter, this is material for you!
