EP Review: Dischordia – Creator, Destroyer

Band: Dischordia (United States)
Album: Creator, Destroyer (2011)
Genre: Progressive Death Metal

“The point is, you are alive, when they start to eat you.”

This EP is one in a pile I got from Niek, which needed to be done while he was busy chilling out in London. What I got from him was more of a press release, rather than a press kit. So I had to contact Eric Burnet from Ricburn Media, in order to obtain a press kit. In about two hours I was supplied with what I needed, and this service is really what coloured my view of this record. However, this bias isn’t totally undeserved as you’ll see later. I wasn’t actually acquainted with any of Dischordia’s work, neither was I with any of their influences, but soon I discovered I was in for a pleasant surprise.

I’ll start off with the quote I posted above. This is a piece of spoken text at the beginning of the song Creator, Destroyer, which I posted, together with the rest of the EP, for you below. This first song is the one which initially drew me into this EP, which is partially due to this spoken text. Returning at the beginning of the last song, they seem sort of witty, although they are completely out of context. Speaking of text. The lyrics are quite deep when you read them, but I’m not caring to explain any of it to you. It’s about the music in the first place for most Metalheads, so I’ll focus on that.

And what music this is! The drums are excellent. They are very tight and technical, which makes them able to utterly delight me. As normal I have nothing to say about the vocals, other than that they are varied. Singer Josh Turner sticks to the growled vocals but manages to apply a wide range of growls in order to keep things interesting.
The main selling point on this EP though is its accessibility. Yeah, this is Death Metal, but the tone of this band is really pleasant, and the production is really polished. Influenced by bands such as Decapitated, Meshuggah, and The Dillinger Escape Plan, Dischordia clearly refers to these bands in their music. However, Dischordia does have a distinct sound, it’s progressive, Djenty, technical with a tiny splash of Deathcore.

The guitarist is quite able, but on the other hand, I feel that the guitars are not tight enough, especially at the parts where Technical Death Metal takes over. Another little flaw on this EP is the bass, which seems to be drowned out at moments. As a bassist I can’t really appreciate that. However, these are really tiny spots on the grand sleeve this EP presents, which are only to be seen when you take a close-up view.

Hereby I’ve come to the end of the meat. After having waved around their POOFstick, the guys leave me utterly amazed. At first I couldn’t be bothered by anything but the title track, but after having listened to this a few times, I discovered what kind of gem this is. The few tiny downsides keep this EP just under perfect. Although it is hard to play proper Technical Death, Dischordia managed really well in my opinion, and for four dollars, fans of this can’t really leave this on the shelf.

“Now you know how to show a little respect.”

My Grade: 9.0/10
Buy this when:

  • you like any of the mentioned influences
  • you like your Death Metal progressive and technical
  • you ’re not too much of a fan of the raw tone, but you prefer a more sleeker style of Death Metal

I’d hardly call this “chilling out” mate: work’s riding me like a friggin’ donkey!

On a more to the point note: indeed, this is juicy stuff!

  2. Toreignimmortal Says:

Haha, fair enough. I’m quite alright on my own so you can focus on your work ;)

  3. Niek Says:

You don’t wanna know how grateful I am that you’re almost single-handedly keeping this site running. If all goes well there’ll be contributions of me this week again though. Should be able to do one or two! Fingers crossed.

  4. Toreignimmortal Says:

Tomorrow morning will bring some more from me as well.

Yeah, T, you’re doin’ great. Squirrels have chewed into the cable lines at the NorthWest corner of my property and it has REALLY slowed down my internet. My ISP has been out to check last week and turned it in to their line maintenance department, who evidently don’t get in any fuckin’ hurry. Anyway, it’s really stopping me from doing anything until it’s repaired. :(

  6. Niek Says:

Some damn Metal squirrels you have in Tennessee!

  7. byrd36 Says:

After this shit they’re gonna be dead squirrels if I see them near those lines again! I mean, those lines are new from May after the April tornado ordeal. I’m gonna call my ISP again when I get in from work today and let them know that if I’m not getting high speed I’m not paying for high speed!

  8. Niek Says:

    Dead squirrels are Metal too!

Anyfuck, yeah you should. If they don’t stick those cables deep enough into the ground, that’s their fault, not yours. Don’t pay for what you’re not getting. I haven’t payed for my mobile internet for a year now. It wasn’t working half the time, I complained them silly and then I didn’t have to pay anymore. Still doesn’t work properly, but at least I’m not paying for it!

  9. byrd36 Says:

The lines are only underground from the pole to my house. The main lines are overhead from pole to pole, a real genius plan in a wooded area!

  10. Toreignimmortal Says:

I think we Europeans are the most metal. We killed all our squirrels :P

  11. Niek Says:

@Byrd36: or in an area where you can expect a nice storm or two each year.

@Toreignimmortal: Indeed we are. But I miss my squirrel stew on occasion…
