Music Posts for Tuesday September 7th 2010

A fresh installment of music posts for you on this great Tuesday morning. At least, I hope it’s great, because I scheduled this post to go up last Friday and I didn’t even bother looking at the weather forecast. Why did I schedule this post so far in advance? Because at this very fuckin’ moment I’m waking up in a Polish hotel room: I’m on a business trip! (Well, it’s for a course really.)

Anyway, enough with the jibbajabba. What have we got today? Well, Finnish metal to start off with. From a band named Code for Silence. Very tasty, I promise! Subsequently, will indulge ourselves in some Canadian metalcore. And for desert we’ve got something from Göteborg, Sweden – that’s where a lot of good stuff comes from – namely a band with the brilliant name of Deals Death.

Code for Silence – The Day

As said, let’s start with the Fins. This five-man horde – not much of a horde – is from the town Jyväskylä. Try pronouncing that when you’ve got your mouth stuffed with dry biscuits. What is it? Melodic Death Metal dealing with lyrical topics such as “life”. What’s cool to know is that this band’s drummer, a guy named Rolf Pilve, is also playing with a number of other bands, including Solution .45 and Miseration. Talented and busy man!

So, what’s up today? A music video! From their album D.Ecaying M.Atter O.Rganic N.Emesis (D.M.O.N. in short), the song The Day to be exact. It features some darker atmospheric tunes, in the style of The Few Against Many and heavy riffs, but it’ll break out into melodic choruses. An excellent piece of metal!

Bow down in respect and thankfulness for Rufio, who dropped me the link to this song!

Disfigured Ellegance – The Last Disease

The Canadian metalcore I promised then. Disfigured Elegance is from Montreal, Québec and can be called a “young band” in more than one ways. Firstly they formed in 2009 and secondly they’re all between 15 and 17 years old. They are ambitious, aiming to be not just another “riff-breakdown-riff-breakdown” core band. That’s a great ambition and needed too!

So, do they manage? Well, we’ve got a track called The Last Disease for you here, the title track of their recently released debut album. Though their song structural intentions may be good, they can still use some originality in the song “feel” and techniques department. It’s metalcore, with slow breaks. Nothing too special, but not unpleasant either.

Deals Death – Fortified

Something closer to my own taste: Deals Death. Fuckin’ awesome metal band name! This band was formed some years ago, from the ashes of a previous band that was formed by a group of students of a musical college. It took some member- and name changes, but eventually they became the five-piece band they are today.

What about their style? Well, primarily melodeath, but it has some thrashy elements to it too; pay attention to the rhythm guitars. Moreover, there’s some background atmospheric keyboards and an angrily screaming baboon, which is what we like over here! This track is called Fortified, from their 2010 album Elite. Play it LOUD!

Just incoming: the band has decided to scrap all their recordings for Elite and start all over with the help of Jonas Kjellgren (Scar Symmetry). This particular recording, therefore, is outdated as of now and, for extra clarity, Jonas Kjellgren has nothing to do with this one!

You guys are killing me with all these new finds — I have too much music to check out already, but now I have more. I’m especially floored by Deals Death — fucking fantastic!

You’re not the only one, we’re killing me too. I’ve got so much stuff that I want to try out, but instead of chewing it away, I just add new stuff to it :P

Niek, check out this Sept 16 MySpace blog post from Deals Death. They’re getting Jonas Kjellgren (Scar Symmetry) to remix “Elite” and seem to be disavowing the previous versions of all the songs, including that YouTube clip you posted.

I’ll consider that good news. Another band going pro :)
I do hope they keep a watch up for the end result sounding too synthetic though. Scar Symmetry is great, one of my favorite bands actually, but it is on the very edge of becoming overproduced in my view, particularly their last album.

I thought the song you put up sounded great as it is, and I have the same trepidation as you about the re-do. Keeping my fingers crossed, because this really is an awesome band.

  6. Michael Says:

what album by Deals Death is the song Fortified on?

  7. Niek Says:

From the album Elite. If I’m not mistaking, the album was supposed to be released in 2010, but then the band decided to scrap all the work on it all together and restart recordings. It’s also scrapped from Encyclopaedia Metallum now I see.
