Music Video: Lou Reed & Metallica – The View

For me, the release of this record has passed by silently, and I only discovered it existed a few days ago. As you probably know, Lulu is a collaboration record between Lou Reed and Metallica. Funnily, when I think of Lou Reed, I think of his song Perfect Day, and when I think of Metallica I think of Fuel. Two songs that are seemingly quite the opposite. This was reflected when I gave their single The View a first spin, since I was repulsed by the combination of Metal and Spoken Word.

However, today I gave it another few spins and I think I’ve seen the light. The lyrics are sure enough quite brilliant, the riffing is pretty good and Kirk Hammett seems to be playing a real metal guitar-solo for the first time in his 30-year career.

Lulu was, according to many critics and fans, supposed to be the worst Metallica effort ever. However, several times I’ve tried to get into Metallica and I can’t. This on the other side thoroughly appeals to me and for me, this is then the best thing Metallica have come up with to date. This is the only Metallica song I’ve ever heard (next to my now second favourite song Fuel), in which they don’t break it down into some sweet acoustic ballad, half-way down the song. So, as Reed comments at the end of the video: ‘Bravo, bravo, encore, brilliant.’

But no Facebook for you today. The boys did their best to present you a beautiful website, so that’s what I’m giving you.

Thanks B! I have to say I really can’t appreciate that Lulu stuff. Just the title makes me shiver.

I thought this to be a funny parody to the song:

No, I’m sticking with my opinion that Lulu is metallica’s best album.

I can understand half of your opinion; the part that says the other Metallica stuff wasn’t worth your trouble. Just don’t get why Lulu is.

For me, Metallica has been a huge factor in development of my musical taste, and though I don’t listen to their stuff anymore today, this Lulu thing is just a sign of how far these guys have drifted away from their roots, straight to the Island of Big Fuckin’ Loads of Cash but No Self Esteem.
