Nothing too Cheerful

Three juicy fresh bands for you wrapped in crispy paper. A joy to unwrap, an even bigger joy to listen to. Today’s first band is WhispersaW, which produces a delicious piece of Metal music. Sweet on the outside, with a big hard nut on the in.

After that, you get Atrum Aequora from Australia, playing what’s probably best described as Gothic Metal crossbred with Melodeath, and Devil Sold His Soul, from the UK, with some sort of slow sludgy Metalcore. What all these songs share is a certain sad atmosphere, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be fingerlickingly good! Enjoy!

WhispersaW – Last Breath

My YouTube account gives me suggestions for videos every day. There used to be loads of good new stuff there, but most of what it suggests nowadays is either good but known to me or total fuckin’ crap. The type that instantly kills your stereo set when you put it on (I’m so glad I have a hardened sound card in my computer!).

Today, however, I clicked some inconspicuous “video” – it’s really just an album cover with a blueish image of a Lord Sauron type of dude on it – by a band named WhispersaW. Didn’t figure it to be much, until I heard the first notes. The intro is tasty, has this nice phaser sounds, the melody running from left to right and back again through your speakers.

It’s not just the phaser that’s good. It’s also the hunted, steady pace of the song and the fuckin’ AWESOME grunt the vocalist – his nickname is Krout, which I find a pretty strange nickname; “Cabbage!” – puts up. His vocals are low and deep, so deep he’s probably sucking them in through his anus. Has to be.

This song is called Last Breath, but it’s not really just a last breath. It’s more like someone’s last desperate fleeing minutes with the hounds of the devil on his back. With that in mind, the only thing wrong with this track is the ending. It fades out, which is all wrong. A track that’s called “Last Breath” has just got to end sudden and with a blow. Boom! Sigh! Dead!

Apart from that it’s just awesome music, of which you can find more here!

Atrum Aequora – Grinding the Remains

These guys befriended me on MySpace the other day and they hit my tender-spot right there and then. They have their first single out, which they called Grinding the Remains. Made a video for it too, which you’ll find below. I don’t know exactly why it made me all fizzy inside, but I suppose it’s got something to do with the huge contrast in vocals.

As they put it themselves, “Atrum Aequora was dragged screaming into existence by Travis Cue, Adam Donnellan and Steve Angell in late 2009, as an outlet for the culmination of musical ideas being formed between the trio and hammered into shape”. They used to have a dude on main vocals, but he left and now they have guitarist Adam screaming out the chorus and female vox by a lady named Fran to fill in the spot until they find a new singer.

But guys! You don’t need a new singer. You just need to keep your line-up as it is. Adam-dude has an amazing raw, puked-out scream. Keep him doing that and convince the girl to stay! Maybe you can buy her off with chocolat, or perhaps she’ll be convinced if you buy her a puppy. The solution is always simple.

Devil Sold His Soul – Clouds

From the somewhat cheesy slow moshing in the vid’s intro you’d expect yet another mediocre Metalcore group of colorful T-shirts. Well, you soon realize it’s not, apart from the T-shirts – that’s fine though, I have loads of colorful T-shirts too, I’m an underground metalhead. From what I’ve heard of them, their stuff is slow tempo, musical sadness, ideal for contemplating suicide or simply with a Whiskey in your hand (that’s how I’m enjoying it).

I’m not fuckin’ around here you know. It really does that. It induces thought. (So you better don’t listen to this too long or your brain will explode.) This song should illustrate what I mean. It’s called Clouds and it’s found on their 2006 debut EP Darkness Prevails.
