One Man Show (Pt. 3)
[Today we've got another contribution by our German fellow purpetrator CroOZza. He likes to delve into the depths of Melodic Death Metal and anything that comes close to it, to give us more (usually) unknown bands with high quality material. In the One Man Show series he focuses on bands that aren't bands at all, but lone rangers, single individuals, that put up the racket of a whole horde of long-haired Metal musicians.]
As already said in Pt. 2 of this series, I wanted to include one particular artist in that post, but unfortunately the guy’s album release was postponed. In the meantime, being since February 21st, the record was finally released. So, now I can clear up all the mystery: I was referring to Paul Wardingham’s debut release Assimilate Regenerate, and if you ask me, it already deserves the award for Instrumental Metal Album of the Year!
Mr. Wardingham’s not the only artist we feature in today’s post though, as we’ve also got another Australian solo guitarist in stock for you.
Paul Wardingham – Cyber Warfare / Clones
![]() |
Assimilate Regenerate isn’t Paul Wardingham’s first musical work, because already in 2006 he recorded and released an album titled Interactive, with Australian drummer Grant Collins, under the banner of The Collins/Wardingham Project. The difference is that this time everything you hear is his, and his only. And everything is a lot, a very good lot.
Often his music is described as an instrumental version of Scar Symmetry. This is a valid comparison, but, as he claims himself, he wasn’t influenced by the Swedes: “Don’t mind the SS comparisons, they’re awesome, but it’s funny because I first heard of them after my students kept telling my music sounded like them not because I was influenced by them.”
Even when there is a certain similarity, then still has Mr. Wardingham got his very own style for the rest, which is that of a very futuristic sounding piece of Progressive Melodeath. Because we’re dealing with a fully instrumental record, we’re obviously hearing rich and capable lead guitaring. On the one side you’re being spoiled with beautiful melodies, and on the other side you can’t seem to get out of the state of amazement the music gets you in.
But, because words aren’t nearly half as impressive as the music itself, we’ll feed you two songs, that are likely to convince you to spend part or all – depending on how loaded you are – of the contents of your thick fuckin’ wallet. Why? Because you’ll simply be forced to click on this link and order the record!
Halcyon – Noodle
Now, as said, we’ve got yet another Australian dude in today’s post. A bit of a mysterious one, as I wasn’t able to discover anything about him, except for his nickname. Over a month ago, he released an EP, titled Pastures, on his Bandcamp site. If you’ve got 5 Aussie Bucks to spend, you can download the bugger there, which is a very worthwhile investment!
The EP is fully instrumental, and full of snazzy guitar pleasure. We’re talking Progressive Metal again, with a bit of Fusion, and even a couple of light Jazz notes. There’s a couple of interesting sounds and melodies he conjures up there on his guitar. As you’re used to, we’ve got a track lined up for you.

You didn’t overstate the case for Paul Wardingham. Man, that is some hot shit! I am buying the new album in about 60 seconds. This is sooooo much stronger than 95% of the one-man “bedroom djent” projects that have stirred up so many fanboys into a froth recently. I would put this in the league with Cloudkicker and Dan Dankmeyer, at a minimum.
Halcyon is a good find, too! Thanks.

That is the reaction I wanted to see
Glad you like it!
Even if I’m not a Cloudkicker fan but I definetly would agree Paul’s stuff is much better than the work by these guys. Well, he’s actually no “bedroom djent guy” but a professional musician and that already for a few years so I think you can’t really compare them.

I believe you can also hear him on the latest Universum album, which is a kick-ass piece of work too.

That’s right, he is on the Universum track “Aeon Displacement” on the album “Mortuus Machina”. Fucking brilliant solo, as
Is everything Paul does!
