Album Review: Blood Revolt – Indoctrine

Tue, 19/06/2012

Do you like sour candies? If you do, you’ll know the experience of the first taste being bitterly sour so that you feel like your face is going to turn inside out, but, there’s that hint and then after-taste of real sweetness that makes you eat another. Before long you’re popping the damn things like the bitterness never existed and thinking they’re the best stuff ever. That is how this album hit me. The perfect sour candy.

Blood Revolt is a trio of veteran extreme metalers. James Read (drums) and Chris Ross (guitars) have played with Axis of Advance and Revenge, among others. Vocalist A.A. Nemtheanga is probably best know from Primordial, though he’s also worked with several others. If you’re familiar to any degree with these bands then you may be starting to see how the sour candy came in.

Album Review: Derelict – Perpetuation

Fri, 13/04/2012

For some reason, Canada is Technical Death Metal-land in my head, easily taking the crown with Ascariasis and April 20, they will solidify their position with Derelict’s third full-length Perpetuation. We already covered the fact that two of the twelve songs were up for free download before, but vocalist and owner of Ricburn Media Eric Burnet offered us to take care of his baby. A duty I will fulfil with the greatest pleasure.

The fact that I mentioned Ascariasis is a bit problematic, because they are just fucking epic, and in such I have a hard time in objectively judging Perpetuation. It will most probably be the case that in my effort to not underestimate this album, I’d grossly overrate it, which is good for the band image, but bad for mine. So I’ll dive in while trying to forget Ocean of Colour, which we didn’t even cover on here. Where have we been with our meat-covered asses over the past few weeks?

Derelict present two songs of their upcoming album Perpetuation

Thu, 01/03/2012

As a reviewer, you often need to do some extensive research before you write down anything, and Derelict was a band which I discovered while doing research about Dischordia. It is as such, that Dischordia are promoted by RicBurn Media, lead by our friend Eric Burnett, who in turn is the lead singer of Tech Death-outfit Derelict. At first I wasn’t bothered much by the busy kind of Death Metal, but with this little novelty, they completely fixed that for me.

On the 20th day of April, we will witness the birth of this Canadian Death Metal monster, and a monster this will be! As I can judge from the two songs presented this album will have all the guts needed in order to get Derelict to the next level, the “big” level.

Ascariasis

According to Facebook, this Canadian Prog Death outfit is led by Sharlie Cheen. If that means their practice space is crowded with skanky bitches, I say these guys are living it. However, I doubt these chaps will need the US’ number one alcoholic and drug abuser to get their daily shot of tits and ass. They’re in a band, and a damn good one too. That pulls chicks across the line.

Anyfuck, what I like to focus your attention is the music they make: a richly filled cocktail of viciousness, brutality, melancholy and ass-kickery. The band has released a few tracks throughout 2011, available on their BandCamp. One of those we wrote about earlier.

Brent Petrie

Wed, 25/01/2012

So I’m getting involved in some top secret Metal blogging business that is about to unfold within the next two months or so. It will be landscape changing and all that shit, but right now I’ll keep you in the dark and laugh at you silently. Did I tell you ‘Asshole’ is my middle name? Anyfuck, one thing leads to another and for some not to be disclosed reason we end up at Brent Petrie. Who the hell is Brent Petrie?

He’s a musician. And no, I have no idea if that name of his is short for Brent petroleum. In fact, there’s much else I don’t know about him and for that reason I’ll limit myself to mentioning what I do know. Like that he’s Canadian – I think – and that he is the sole crewmember of his project…, named Brent Petrie. Simplicity can be refreshing, can’t it?!

Interview: Karkaos

Tue, 17/01/2012

You may remember that some time ago CroOZza wrote a little piece on a Canadian formation named Karkaos. They delivered this immensely intense piece of Melodic Death Metal, with elements of darkness, Folk and pirate atmospheres, as well as a bunch of other stuff. Stuff’s definitely cool!

Anyway, one thing led to another and before we knew it we got into contact with Veronica Rodriguez, lead singer in the band, who got some of her band mates to agree to do an interview with us. That’ll follow in a bit, but first let’s present you with a brief overview of the band’s history, to give you some perspective.

Interview: Krokmitën

Tue, 03/01/2012

After we reviewed Krokmitën’s 46-minute one-shot of Experimental Death Metal, Alpha-Beta, last week, it seemed like a good idea to shoot some questions over to the band and get some clarification on this very conceptual and freaky-as-fuck album from them. Turns out that when we hooked up with Simlev, guitarist, vocalist, main writer and main man, it wasn’t a good idea, but a great idea. To understand Alpha Beta you need to get back into the band’s history. And that’s precisely what we’ve extensively done. Though we haven’t forgotten the future either.

Honestly, this was one of the most pleasant and insightful interviews I’ve undertaken to date. Thanks to Simlev for spilling his guts and giving us an awesome interview!

Album Review: Krokmitën – Alpha-Beta

Wed, 28/12/2011

In August, a Canadian band named Krokmitën released a 46-minute album they had worked on since 2005. Though a long time to cover just one record, it isn’t abnormal and wouldn’t have dropped my jaw. What did is the fact that this album is really just one ”song” and actually more than that. Because in addition to 46 minutes of Old-school-type Experimental Death Metal, the album features professionally made but freaky-as-fuck animations alongside.

Alpha-Beta is like an experience, I found, similar to a movie or play, even so when just listening to the music without the animations. In fact, that’s how I listened to the release the first four or five times and I can tell you that it’ll still achieve that effect that way.

We’ve got the full 46-minute bloodsucker streaming down below – in four pieces, because it’s too lengthy for YouTube – but you can also go to the band’s home page to download the full thing freely and legally.

Karkaos – The Tempest

Thu, 22/12/2011

To be honest, had I made a Best-of-2011 list myself and had I published this, as many others, in early December, Karkaos wouldn’t have been on it. But since I stumbled across their video for The Tempest, and immediately got the EP as well, they’ve secured their place on it. However, because I really don’t feel like actually making such a list, it’ll remain a purely hypothetical achievement. Still, I’d like to emphasize that this band has impressed me!

Karkaos is a young group from Montreal, Canada founded only two years ago. With their EP In Burning Skies, released late October, the band released its first output. The music video to The Tempest appeared already in September, but didn’t make it to my screen until just now. But from there it didn’t take long to grab me.

Bookakee

Mon, 12/12/2011

Visitor Simon was out in Montréal a while ago, where he discovered some new material that was to his liking. Bookakee is one of them, and they do Technical Brutal Death Cumsplatter Metal. Other than that the band consists of five guys and that they love to kill Super Mario on stage, my intel on these guys is pretty limited.

So, I’ll just proceed with giving you the tunes. First one is a song called Bookakee Blast, the first song from their first EP, released last June.
