Conan

Thu, 08/12/2011

As I promised you all, we have some Doom Metal to digest, and today’s subject is Conan. The first time I ever ‘did’ a Doom Metal band was with Subterranean Disposition, a project I really liked for its diversity. Apart from this however, I’ve had no experience with the legendary DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM Metal, which makes it all the more interesting.

However, Conan is completely different from the stuff Subterranean Disposition makes. The guys claim to be “as heavy as interplanetary thunder amplified through the roaring black hole anus of Azathoth.” which is quite a claim. I’ve listened to their EP some time, and I must say, these guys are heavy. Heavier than anything I’ve hear before. However, before you make the jump, make sure you’re connected to some good speakers.

EP Review: Brain Hammer – Brain Hammer EP

Wed, 30/11/2011

When I put up the Brain Hammer EP and looked at the cover, the first thing I thought was “Oh, Lord.” And that’s how this EP feels. These first seconds just annoy the shit out of me, but on the other hand, perhaps those first seconds are the best part of the whole album. It’s like that one movie where they sew one’s eye shut. It gives you the creeps, but you enjoy it, because it is one of the few things to give you them.

Brain Hammer are an Extreme Metal outfit from the Lebanon, but you’ve seen that already. At least, Extreme Metal is how they describe their EP. Although the mix of Death-, Doom- and Thrash Metal sounds pretty extreme in theory, in practice it doesn’t work out that extreme. The Brain Hammer EP practically consists out of five mid-paced songs with a total length of round about 18 minutes. Of these songs, the third one Crosses of Wood immediately stands out. This is a rather enchanting song, which actually shows that there is some potential writing skill in this band. However, the rest is just as average as average can be, as you’ll find out.

Dämmerfarben

Thu, 24/11/2011

As I do not have access to the Dump a link “list”, it doesn’t happen that often that I do music posts without being asked to. However, this time I’ve got something special which I really wanted to share. Facebook-user Patrick Urban, sent us a link to this Atmospheric Black/Doom Metal band. Dammerfarben are a German band formed in 2005 by Guitarist/Vocalist/Cellist Blackheart Nostarion and started out as a solo-project. The addition of more members however, gave the band a boost, bringing forth their debut album Im Abentrot.

Closing in on 55 minutes Im Abentrot is not the shortest album and with songs in German, I would imagine this to be a very interesting listen. I turned out to be right as I searched the web for some material. I’ve got some awesome stuff for you after the jump.

Blind Tears

Mon, 14/11/2011

A couple of months ago we published an interview with France’s Arkan, which was taken by Kilik2049. In reality Kilik2049 is called Simon and he is one of the two guitarists / vocalists in a beginning French band based out of Le Mans – yes, that’s where they do those 24-hour races. The band’s called Blind Tears and they do a grungy piece of Doom Metal. And of course we’re happy to return the favor and give them some air time.

They’ve got a collection of twelve songs out that they’ve titled First Tears. Catchy! It’s not all up to standards yet and the recording quality is poor, but it’s clear the band has some interesting ideas they’re working on. They’re mixing a very classic Metal feel with depressing darkness and doom elements. Sabbath and Iron Maiden are the most apparent influences and these then are mixed with fifty cans of bleach and fifty more of tar.

Rockin’ Out with Black Thai

Mon, 10/10/2011

It may be cheating a little to include Black Thai in our Rockin’ Out series, but their style of Stoner/Doom Metal is the “boiling point” for me. The level at which Hard Rock begins to bubble with something heavier.

Black Thai formed in 2009 in the Boston area and have released an EP in 2010 and a split earlier this year. Our focus today will be on the 2010 EP Blood From on High. To give due credit, this post by GroverXIII at TNOTB brought these guys to my attention. Since then I’ve listened to this EP several times and it rocks the fuck out.

Subterranean Disposition – The Most Subtle of Storms

Fri, 30/09/2011

Another piece of news tonight! Terry Vainoras was kind enough to inform us of his latest project, which is called Subterranean Disposition. The Most Subtle of Storms is the first glimpse of the self-entitled debut and was recently released on the web. Recently being two weeks ago.

Terry describes his music as ranging “From the grindcore of Damaged, to the Swedish melodic death stylings of Earth and on through the metallic hardcore of Order of Chaos, the black metal of Hellspawn and also the doom styles of Cryptal Darkness, The Eternal and Insomnius dei, Terry has covered much musical ground and Subterranean Disposition is the melting pot of creativity where the former and recent influences can meet and interplay.” Something interesting must be coming out of that.

Album Review: Ulcerate – The Destroyers of All

Sat, 24/09/2011

“What is this band’s name? *Turns album on its side to read*” “I forgot the name *again needs to turn the album on its side*” Ulcerate is a three-piece Death Metal band from New Zealand, or are they?

The logo doesn’t make reading the name of the band more easy, but the front cover of this album looks awesome. Next to the picture of this renaissance sculpture on the front, the rest of the album is covered in blurry close-ups of similar sculptures. Very cool.

Let me be honest, when I got this album I was informed about its apparent inaccessibility and when I put it up I was able to agree with it. However, after several spins I found the music, just like the cover, rather interesting.

Amorphis Shat One Out Too But We Didn’t Smell It

Sat, 16/07/2011

There are a couple of you guys that keep us supplied with bands to write about via the Dump a Link! page. Sometimes it’s also used to keep us sharp. Like when Amorphis released a new album at the end of May and it’s July and our shit-filled noses didn’t pick up on its scent. Thanks Rufio for giving us a kick in the ass!

The album in question is called The Beginning of Times and came out through Nuclear Blast. It contains twelve songs combining into nearly an hour of the Finnish band’s Gothicy, Doomy Melometal. Nothing your mom wouldn’t like.

One Man Show (Pt. 4)

Wed, 08/06/2011

Welcome to the fourth installment of this series. A series focusing on single musicians that prefer to do their thing alone instead of with annoying band members. Three such artists are Sami Anttila and Liquorworks from Finland and Nimbatus from Germany. For a change, the three gents are not found operating in the Djent area. Instead, they play various other forms of Metal. What exactly those are you’ll experience in the following.

Album Review: Nero Order – The Tower

Tue, 17/05/2011

When San Francisco’s Nero Order sent me their debut album The Tower for reviewing purposes the other day, I first though we were dealing with an EP here. An EP with four tracks worth of progressively sounding Doom Sludge. But, as so often with Sludge / Doom Metal, the fact that the tempo is low warrants incredibly long track lengths, which means The Tower’s four tracks still span very nearly an hour of music.

Anyfuck, our purpose today is to review all that music, lyrically focused on the occult, metaphysics and some new age stuff too, that the four-piece band self-released in mid 2010. Moreover, once we have, I’ll provide you with the link leading to the location where you can download the full record for free. Let’s kick off.
