Winter Crescent – Battle of Egos (the EP)

Fri, 01/04/2011

The other day we featured a brief post about a Greek Progressive Metal band named Winter Crescent. In response to that, we got into contact with Thanos Sgouridis, the band’s bass player. He gave us a link where we found the band’s full 2009 debut demo, titled Battle of Egos.

It’s actually way to good and long – with nearly 35 minutes of playing time – to be a demo, and so we prefer to refer to it as an EP, though one could even opt to call it a full fuckin’ album. Anyway, we downloaded the fucker – you can too, as we’ll provide the download link at the bottom of this post – and checked it out in its entirety.

Winter Crescent – Battle of Egos, Part I

Fri, 11/03/2011

We got a friendship invitation the other day by a Greek band, named Winter Crescent. Strange name for a band coming out of a country where the average temperature in any month seems to stay well above zero degrees Celsius (for all you Fahrenheit fans, that’s when water freezes). Anyway, usually we don’t bother much with friendship requests – we accept them, but don’t do much more than that – as we prefer to wait for explicit review requests. After all, we’ve usually got enough bands on our list to take care of for centuries to come already.

However, with Winter Crescent something in our inner being told us to play a song before clicking the closing cross on their profile page. Well, needless to say, we enjoyed what we heard!

Greek Fuckin’ Brutality

Sat, 29/01/2011

This post is solely made up of the band suggestions given to us by frequent visitor brutal fonias. He is Greek, and he likes his material either Brutal or pitch Black, that much I’ve learnt about him. The other day he suggested a trio of Greek bands that match his tastes perfectly. We start off with a duo of Brutal Death Metal, and finish off with some Symphonic Black Metal (he calls it “a masterpiece”).

This’ll be a bit strong for a hung-over Saturday morning, but trust me, you’ll get out stronger!

Bewized!

Tue, 21/12/2010

Yo! A short post, because I’m low on info on this band. A longer post after all, because Paschalis from the band just sent me an info batch! I got a line from this band last week and was über-positively surprised by what they have on display! Bewized is a Greek band, coming out of Thessaloniki, the second biggest city in Greece. The band joined up in 2007, but the line-up of the four current constituent members is of later date. The band released an EP in 2008 and then worked hard for two years on their debut album called The Scorch of Rage, scheduled for worldwide release in early 2011.

Album Review: Terrordrome – Vehement Convulsion (the Second!)

Mon, 06/12/2010

[Note by Niek: Terrordrome’s Vehement Convulsion. Just over a week ago I - sort of, it was more like buckshot in trying to hit anything - reviewed this album myself. Being a relative layman in the field of Brutal Death Metal I refrained from passing any real judgment on the album. Our occasional contributor from the UK, Tarkan, is a Brutal DM fan though, and today he’ll give you a clear explanation of why this release, though already two years old, will “tear you a new anus”, all in the good way]

This was the first release I’d heard by the Grecian monolith of metallic brutality that is Terrordrome – hardly surprising really since all that preceded Vehement Convulsion was a few demos and an EP, really – and even now, a couple of years down the line, this release still fucks with my head and in no bad way either.

The Fallen Within – Sound of Destruction

Thu, 02/12/2010

People would write December 7th 2009 when I posted a track by The Fallen Within, an Athens-based Melodeath formation that, at that time, planned on releasing its debut album Intoxicated exactly a week later. The vid I had embedded with that post has since stopped working, so there’s no point referring to it. Anyway, from that moment on they completely slipped my attention. I’m sure they aren’t the only band that did, with all the shitloads of Metal that have come my way over the course of The Baboon’s first year.

Terrordrome – Vehement Convulsion & Begetters of Fear and Ruin

Sun, 28/11/2010

My tastes within Death Metal go quite far and wide, subjectively judging my own standards. For example, I’ve elaborately reported how much I like the new Decrepit Birth album. That’s pretty heavy and technical stuff, isn’t it? However, despite that Decrepit Birth is considered Brutal Death Metal – in tandem with being Technical Death Metal – Brutal DM isn’t generally something falling within the boundaries of my tastes.

What to do then when Greece’s Terrordrome sent me a copy of their 2008 album Vehement Convulsion, as well as their two tracked 2010 split release with Oath to Vanquish, titled Begetters of Fear and Ruin? I didn’t know, and hence I’ve been putting off doing anything with the album but flip through the tracks once or twice. Well, apart from playing it max volume in the car with my bro while stopping, all windows opened, in the neighborhood in the middle of the night, and before driving off with a load of wheel spin and a smoking clutch. Nothing like behaving like a total fuckwhit.

Greek Shredding

Thu, 14/10/2010

Some who know me, know that I’m a total shredaholic. Nothing, except sex, perhaps, makes me happier than a good piece of shredding. Gets me all fired up and shit. For this post you better like shredding too, as it’s stuffed with it. And not just any shredding, but Greek shredding! Following the first artist, who happened to be Greek, I stumbled upon more Greeks with quick nimble fingers. Three makes a post usually, so I cut it off there, but I could have added a shitload more.

We serve Ioannis Anastassakis, Gus Drax and Bob Katsionis today. And they get louder/more metal in that order. The first is probably best described as solid progressive Rock, but the other two clearly move into the realm of metal. BUT! It’s not all guitar shredding today, as Bob Katsionis is a master at shredding on something else!

A Feast of Flesh

Sat, 25/09/2010

You know, I’m a meat eater. You might have guessed from the burger story, but I’m a particular sucker for beef. Tender, not cooked to shoe soles. I like it when it’s still slightly red inside, so you can still see the flesh it is.

So, that calls for an ode to flesh! Today you’ll get served a trio of flesh, starting with an entré of Bone Gnawer with Feast of Flesh. Today’s main course will be Mandatory with Flesh Possessed. To complete the feast, we’ll close off with Babel’s Gate, prepared in the Greece’s Septic Flesh’s way. Enjoy your meal meat.

Music Posts for Thursday August 26th 2010

Thu, 26/08/2010

We’ve got three for ya today: Portuguese melodeath, Greek doomy Death and Ukrainian metalcore by Echidna, Luna Obscura and Wasted Heroes respectively. So crank up the volume, play the music and ignore your neighbors bashing on your door for quiet. It’s metal. It’s meant to be played loud.
