Album Review: Divultion – The End of Humanity

Sat, 14/04/2012

The end of humanity. On the cover is an old hitman holding a silenced pistol. God who’s about to put a bullet in Humanity?

The album is Divultion’s first. The Ukrainian band out of Simferopol has been a musical unit since June 2005, but only saw its efforts come to full fruition with the early 2011 release of The End of Humanity. Titles like Worms Under Skin, Eat My Guts and Rotting give a strong suggestion of Brutal Death Metal and reality proves this right at least partly. Divultion does focus on delivering a product that is as loud and harsh as it could possibly be. On the contrary, there is a strong technical focus in the eight songs – there’s also an outro with Boondock Saints outtakes – that The End of Humanity is rich.

Malodorous release a new demo!

Tue, 13/03/2012

United States, internet-based Grindcore outfit Malodorous have returned with a new demo, after 5 years. After their debut Amaranthine Redolence, of which especially Eyes of Abomination gained some limited fame for its ferocious double bass rolls. Now they’re back with a new demo Augury of the Aborted, which was released yesterday.

The good thing is, that we have some freebies again. The guys have decided to give this demo away for free, and that doesn’t come with a sleek looking Bandcamp page, but with a low-fi Mediafire link. Hell yeah!

Album Review: Ambivalence – Silicone Magic

Fri, 09/03/2012

We’ve been getting more and more Metal from the Eastern regions of Europe lately. And the good thing is that often we’re surprised by the standard of the material. This one’s no different. It’s a Ukrainian outfit called Ambivalence, based out of the city of Lviv. Silicone Magic is their third full-length since forming up in 2001. It’s from 2010 and so a bit old already, but this thing was a pleasant surprise!

When I first picked up the album I had a brief moment of ”hm, nice hot chick”, only to then discover the shriveled old tits hanging from that same chick’s body. She’s holding a pair of silicone boob-stuffings and is wearing some proper bling. Looked into the whole thing a bit more before I even started playing the record and it turns out this album’s concept is a complaint to society’s superficial focus on appearance, or in any case to those that are led by this. That’s an original topic for a Metal album, and it turns out also the music is rather original in itself.

The Right Wing Conspiracy – Mental Block

Sat, 25/02/2012

We’ve had our little romance with US Grindcore-outfit The Right Wing conspiracy. First we reviewed their third album Alternate World and after that guitarist/vocalist Rafael Ortiz was kind enough to explain some aspects of Alternate World to us in an interview. Now this two-piece are back with a video for their song Mental Block.

The song is only 36 seconds long, but I liked the low-fi music video that went with it, perfectly conveying what the music and lyrics feel like. To quote myself: “Alternate World is a wonderful piece of Grindcore. The original concept (that is within the realm of Grindcore), together with the excellent songwriting and the more than decent musicianship make for something worth getting.”

Album Review: Beaten to Death – Xes and Strokes

Wed, 15/02/2012

This album came in on the hight of my ‘Core-madness, but now after a good few weeks, it has diminished to something more in the way of indifference on the given subject. So Xes and Strokes will probably get some beatings here, although it won’t be beaten to death. Ok, lame pun there, but yeah, that’s how things go when inspiration’s lacking from time to time, as is often the case when writing on a subject that doesn’t bother you too much.

To begin with, Beaten to Death have a really interesting concept on their sleeves. Most bands would take their Grinding heaviness into a Punk direction, but on Xes and Strokes, Beaten to Death seemed to have looked at some Melodic Hard Rock in stead. For me personally, that’s not the greatest surprise, since I know some great Norwegian Hard Rock bands, but the combination turns out to be pretty good.
While trying to classify the album for you above, a few terms have been flying around in my head and on the screen. First of all Grindcore, which is the main genre, but also Metalcore, Grind ‘N Roll, Hard Rock, Hardcore etc. They all seem to fit.

Album Review: Goreskin Coffin – Corpse Filled Caskets

Mon, 30/01/2012

It’s weird, considering the name of this blog, but for some reason I’m not doing too many Death Metal reviews. I think I this is my second or third one, and to be precise, it’s my first Brutal Death Metal release. Exciting.

About half a month ago the boys themselves approach us via Facebook, and their description of “Death Grind / Black Metal / Melodic Brutality” appealed to me, so I took the job. At first though, I was hesitant as in my experience, Brutal Death Metal bands got fairly low grades. That is, in comparison to bands from other genres like Black Metal and Hardcore. However, when I first turned on this 17-minute long piece, I was quite surprised to hear something which grabbed me. Usually, I feel that in Brutal Death Metal, the heaviness is drowning out in its own blood, and together with this, my interest for the music. Corpse Filled Caskets does not contain the loudest riffing, but there is some really interesting drumming and riffing going on which, together with the witty dialogues in between make for an enjoyable quarter of an hour.

Miseration – Dreamdecipher

Tue, 03/01/2012

Hell, we’re up to date. Yesterday “Melodic Death Metal”-outfit Miseration put out a video for their song Dreamdecipher. Yeah, the Melodic Death Metal is in quotation marks because our holy bible (aka the Metal Encyclopedia) says that, but I can tell you, this is not Melodic Death Metal. Sounds more like Technical Grindcore to me.

Who are Miseration? You ask. Miseration are a Swedish band formed in 2006, and have since produced two full-lengths, on which they play a very heavy, Grindcore-influenced kind of Melodeath. Stylistically they are a very interesting band, and I haven’t really heard something like what they did on their first two albums before. Dreamdecipher however takes their sound to a less original height, although it’s still a good song of course.

Album Review: Vaulting – Nucleus

Tue, 03/01/2012

A couple of months ago we covered a song by a German band named Vaulting. I characterized the song as having ”plenty of fast-paced leads, hooks and sharp edges”. A few weeks later the band released its debut record Nucleus, containing thirteen brand new songs of pretty much the same general inclination. If it wasn’t for a bunch of them being rather different.

So Nucleus is a debut according to drummer Sebastian Gathof, so it’s kinda strange how Encyclopaedia Metallum lists 2008’s Epilog as a full-length too. Because taking a closer look at it, it seems more like an EP, with only 18 odd minutes of playing time. Yet there are eight songs which is more than you’d expect on a normal EP. The key is in the Grindcorian length of songs: one of them is only four seconds.

Album Review: Asylium – An Architecture of Human Desolation

Tue, 20/12/2011

Metal out of Sweden today, by a four-piece named Asylium. An Architecture of Human Desolation is their first full-length accomplishment and it was released into the world in June of this year. I’ve been on it for a couple of days now and I can tell you it’s loud. Grinding. Heavy. Hard. Raw. Crude. And not for fuckin’ pussies.

An Architecture of Human Desolation is a bit like Grindcore for people with extra big balls. It has the same integral crudeness and hardness, just played at extra brutal amp settings and with an overload of sharp hooks and leads. A concept that should be familiar. But does it really work?

Interview: The Right Wing Conspiracy

Wed, 14/12/2011

After our review of their upcoming album Alternate World, we’ve decided to give them another knock on their door. Vocalist/guitarist Rafael Ortiz came out and was prepared to answer some questions for us.

In short, The Right Wing Conspiracy is this politically outspoken Grindcore band from South Carolina, the States. Their songs are short, intense and always contain a little twist that keeps the listener awake. They have been around for about 5 years now, and they have released three full-lengths and one split-album. After the jump, Rafael’s going to tell us a bit more about the background of The Right Wing Conspiracy, the songwriting process and their influences. So get ready!
