Real and Fake Japanese

Sat, 14/05/2011

As implied by the title, today’s post contains two bands of which one is really Japanese and the other’s a poser. Their respective band names certainly won’t give it away. Were you to judge by the song titles and the feel and lyrics, however, you’d probably put your money on Imaginary Flying Machines to be the one really Japanese, since both lyrics and title are Japanese. You’d be deprived of your dough though, as it’s precisely the other way around. The “WTF?” and “why?” will be explained.

Metallo alla Genovese

Wed, 11/05/2011

Despite that there’s no meat in it, I still quite dig a proper Pasta alla Genovese. Basically it’s pasta pesto. Fuckin’ tasty and bound to keep your girlfriend off of kissing for a while, so that you don’t have to stop headbanging. Turns out today, thanks to a suggestion by HarveyD, that there’s also such a thing as Metallo alla Genovese and that it’s equally delicious.

Ready, Set, Fall! Is, you’ve guessed it, from Italy’s city of Genoa. That’s in the North, close to France and Switzerland, by saying which I’ve not only told you interesting stuff about the band, but also updated your geographical understanding of the boot-shaped European country. Seriously, are we good for fuckin’ everything or what?!

Rufio’s 10 Favorite Metal Albums of 2000-2010 – Part 2

Wed, 20/04/2011

[Yesterday saw the publication of the first part of Rufio’s list of best Metal albums of the decade 2000 to 2010. Today he’ll continue his discussion with the top 3 albums. This time the albums are ordered to rank. Moreover, because he likes ‘em so much, Rufio has picked two songs off each album for your Metallic entertainment.

To close off, Rufio has also included five albums that were at some point in the picture, but eventually didn’t make it in. Still, he considers these kick-ass and basically worth their price!]

Rufio’s 10 Favorite Metal Albums of 2000-2010 – Part 1

Tue, 19/04/2011

[Editorial note: Just when you think Metalland has output its last lists at least until the end of 2011, you get another. Our regular visitor and contributor of great suggestions of bands for us to write about, Rufio, has been working on his own little list of favorite albums of the past decade. I know for a fact that he spent a lot of time and care in preparing this list, and I wholeheartedly agree on many of his inclusions, which also includes a couple of bands you might not have thought of at the first insight. In short, a proper list, with many bands that you should be checkin’ out if you haven’t listened to them already!

To facilitate in this, Rufio has selected his favorite songs off each album to be included in this article. We’ll start today with the numbers 4 to 10 off his list, though they are in no particular order. Tomorrow we’ll continue with part 2 of this endeavor, and Rufio will feed you his top three - this time they are ordered - albums of the Zeros.]

I started this process back in early February and likely should have been finished about a month sooner, but analyzing all of my Metal meticulously took a bit of a toll. Anyways, as the title suggests this is a list of my favorite albums from the past decade. Originally the list was around 25 albums that was then whittled to 20. I’ve been juggling those back and forth for some time, with a few being outright eliminated under an “obvious” clause so I could shed light on a few other gems.

The remaining choices will be in a list of 10 with 5 honorable mentions. The list is in no set order, but there will be a top 3. The top 3 will be talked about at length with two songs, the other 7 will have a few sentences with one song attached to them.

Read on past the jump.

Destrage – Neverending Mary

Fri, 11/02/2011

This one popped up in my inbox recently and instantly appealed to my Metallic tastes for crunchy rich audible violence that’s also highly melodic. Destrage is not a new Metal monkey here at The Baboon, but they do keep coming up with crafty songs that I just really fuckin’ like. A groove-rich, melody-wealthy sound is a cause of that, but the main thing is an unmistakable originality in song-writing and performance. The second single off their 2010 album is called Neverending Mary and it’s found embedded in this post.

The Milanese band formed back in 2002 and released its second album, titled The King is Fat ‘n’ Old in October 2010. Jade’s Place was the first single, that we featured back in October. Not all of you may have liked that one, as it was slightly freaky and also a little on the softer side, but then this new one might be in the market a little better. I for one quite like its awesome guitar work!

My Aim to Farewell – Condemned

Fri, 04/02/2011

A quicky like that may not be enough to satisfy your hunger for Metal. Well, we’ll give you another one then, and we’ll stick to Core. Got a message from a five-piece band named My Aim to Farewell, from Turin, Italy, that produces Hardcore/Metalcore and recently uploaded the first of three songs on its demo. Nothing new, but not too bad either. Thought I’d share.

Cool thing about this is that you can get a free copy of their demo for a small price. Quoting them: “Just make a video review or a cover or anything about MATF and send it to us as a video response on YouTube”. If you’ve got time on your hand, now you’ve got something to fill it with. If you do choose to submit something, let us know, especially if it’s a cover!

Album Review: Blood Thirsty Demons – Misanthropy

Sun, 23/01/2011

Blood Thirsty Demons: though plural, it’s a one-man show, under the ownership of Cristian Mustaine. Judging by the band’s name and if you look at the picture of the guy below – don’t think he was actually playing with those gloves on by the way – you’d expect some of the most Satanic Black Metal since the early ‘90’s. You know, that raw-ass shit that makes kids cry instantly, while dogs jump off buildings. The stuff you listen to that your wife, of all the ear-despairing crap you listen to, has the most trouble with.

Well then, she’ll be happy to know that Blood Thirsty Demons isn’t that sort of Black Metal. In fact, it isn’t even Black Metal at all. It’s closest to Thrash Metal really, with a bit of Motörhead-type “Heavy ‘n’ Roll” and some of the dark early Metal influences that were first displayed by Sabbath and the likes. In combination with the lyrics, this has lead label My Kingdom Music to describe BTD’s style as “Horror Metal”. Sweet!

So, BTD has released a new album recently, which is its sixth full-length since starting the band in 1998. Misanthropy is its title and it spread out into the world on November 5th 2010. Time for us to subject it to our subjective scrutiny and tell you want we think!

Album Review: InAllSenses – Hysterical Psychosis

Fri, 21/01/2011

In 1996, the five-headed Death-Thrash formation InAllSenses came to be in the Italian region of Campania. A demo followed, but then, soon after, internal problems threw shit at the fan and hit it too. Result: a split up band. Then comes 2004 and the group arises from its ashes and begins work on its debut studio record, The Experience, which they released in 2008. Don’t you just love an “end good, all good” story like that?

Well, turns out that wasn’t even the end, because in November last year the group’s second album came out, carrying the slightly over the top title Hysterical Psychosis. The music on this record isn’t hysterical at all, nor is it psychotic. Well, actually it is. It’s very psychotic, but no more than any other Metal band on the planet. Metal is pretty psychotic – and energizing and loud and aggressive and crude – almost by definition, which is probably why headbang-loving nutcases like myself love it so much!

To the point of today’s business: My Kingdom Music sent me a copy of the band’s album a while ago. Actually they sent a whole pack of different albums, including many a gem! Today it’s Hysterical Psychosis day of scrutiny. Go and get it or forgo and forget it?

A Pack of Proggies, Pt. 2

Sat, 08/01/2011

Two days ago we posted the first issue of a pack of progressive Metal suggestions by our reader Zodiac. His list of suggestions was too long to wrap up into one post. You would have been bored to shit of our writings and moreover you wouldn’t have appreciated the music as much, as it would have numbed you out. So, today part 2 of Zodiac’s pack is up! That means: Gwynbleidd (US), Ephel Duath (Italy) and Silent Memorial (Switzerland).

Interview: SuperbiA

Mon, 03/01/2011

[Just as this post went up today My Kingdom Music, the band's label sends me an e-mail with some more answers by the band to my own continued questions. I had asked a couple more questions some weeks ago, but the band has been slightly slow to reply - and my puny brain just forgot about it! Now however, I've added in those extra questions and answers. If you've read this post before 6 p.m. CET, you may want to read it again, because extra stuff has appeared!]

In November I put up a review of an album by Italian Progressive Death Metal formation SuperbiA. I scored it a 9.5 on 10 and it also made it into my little list of best replay value albums that I shared with the readers of No Clean Singing. Second place in fact. I guess you won’t be surprised when I tell you I like their stuff! So, it was an honor to find out they we’re up for a little interview with us!
