O’Kingdom

Fri, 27/01/2012

Another one from Bridger’s pack. American again, from one of the various towns throughout that nation called Elizabethtown. No clue which.

Another similarity is that we’re dealing with ‘cory’ stuff again, though not quite as obviously this time. It’s crunchier, more brutal and will touch upon more progressive / technical forms of Metal, meaning it’s got a certain Djentiness to it, in addition to a strong focus on melody in the choruses. It’s good eating listening!

Steryle

Thu, 26/01/2012

I got a couple of suggestions by Bridger some time ago. Like nearly three months or so. It’s just that I haven’t been able to look at these any sooner. Honestly, I’ve got so many bands to cover that I could turn this thing into a full-time job and still lack time.

Anyfuck, let’s focus on a band. This one’s called Steryle and they’re from North Carolina, USA. Despite that they’re listed as Metalcore, and also clearly are, they’re still featured on Encyclopaedia Metallum. Now the naïve reader could read that as if the band must be doing something right, but before we jump to conclusions, let’s note that Encyclopaedia Metallum doesn’t actually have a claim on the (Metallic) truth. That said, Steryle is doing something right.

Within Destruction – King of Serpents

Wed, 04/01/2012

Roughly four months ago I brought you all some exciting news from Slovenia, remember Within Destruction? The young lads were able to impress us with their song Cardiomyopathy (yes, I’m able to spell that out by heart now), which came from their upcoming album From the Depths, to be released this year.

Seven days ago, they made me even more pumped by releasing the second single to From the Depths called King of Serpents. I must say that this is a tiny tad different from Cardiomyopathy, but it’s still typically Within Destruction. That is to say, that it’s still “a combination of Melodical Death Metal riffs, Metalcore rhythm section and melancholic and fast Black Metal melodies”, but in King of Serpents they have thrown in a splash of ‘normal’ Death Metal as well.

That Organism Jenova

Sun, 18/12/2011

Still a bit raw, but full of original and refreshing ideas. That Organism Jenova operates in the Deathcore department, but it’s not really like anything I’ve ever heard, although there are familiar elements.

The band formed in 2009 and has, according to their ReverbNation page, already shared the stage with bigger names in Metalcore, like After the Burial, Born of Osiris and All That Remains. In terms of releases, there have been two EPs, one self-titled, the other titled The Second Cumming. Cheesy!

Album Review: Aspherium – The Veil of Serenity

Thu, 15/12/2011

Closing in on year end, most sites, mags and blogs have started publishing their year-end lists. The Top 10’s of Best Albums of 2011 will rain down on you like a volley of arrows. And with a bit of luck also The Baboon will publish some kind of list. But fuck me sideways, are we glad that we waited a bit with publishing our list! Aspherium comes straight out of fuckin’ nowhere with it’s The Veil of Serenity album.

The band hails from the Norwegian town of Moss, not too far from Oslo. Them being Norwegian I was expecting some ass-ripping Black Metal, with enough blackness to make a black hole feel ashamed and enough evil to make Satan look like a schoolgirl with colorful braids. To some of our regular or irregular writers that would be very preferable per se, but not to me. Darkness doesn’t get it up for me and neither do tremolo picking and poor production.

Not that I couldn’t get it up on any song or band employing these ingredients, it’s just that it’d have to be combined with at least two of the following elements; groove, melody and intelligent songwriting. With Aspherium I find all of this. And more.

The Sharon Tate

Wed, 16/11/2011

As a proper-bred Metalhead I obviously have no fuckin’ clue who Sharon Tate is. Likely, I hope, you don’t either. Sharon Marie Tate was an American actress, born in 1943, and married to Roman Polański, a.k.a. Mr. Afraid to Leave Europe 1977 Child Rapist whose arrest led to public outrage because he happens to have made a movie or two. In 1969 Sharon was murdered by Charles Manson and his band of Weird Ass Nazi Bitches. Events such as these, of course, are certain to attract the interest of Metalbands looking for a shocking band name.

And thanks to Emily we now know this band is called, DUH!, The Sharon Tate. And they hail from Hungary, Budapest it seems. I’ve been able to gather a few facts about these chaps, but internet turns up pretty empty to be honest. Thankfully we’ve got stacks of music to share, after the jump!

The World We Knew

Mon, 07/11/2011

This video was sitting in a little corner of my desktop, sobbing because it didn’t get any attention from me for months. Meanwhile the album has been out for about two months, so I’ll get you some more songs from the album as well.

The World We Knew are a five-piece act from New York, in the States of course. They play a combination of Metalcore and Melodic Death Metal, which we’ve often seen before. However, here singer Frank Fanelli adds a really nice touch to the songs by utilising more Deathcore-ish vocals.

Gig Report: Amon Amarth, Septicflesh and As I Lay Dying in Support

Mon, 24/10/2011

Yesterday marked what must have been one of the most enjoyable days in my whole fuckin’ life, I shit you not. I haven’t had such a good time in years and the smile on my face was both ridiculous and terrifying. Similarly, the ache in my upper neck muscles I’m currently experiencing is ridiculous and excruciating. All attributed to the efforts of Septic Flesh, As I Lay Dying and Amon Amarth, each in its bigger or smaller share.

EP Review: Sort by Title – Independent Process

Thu, 06/10/2011

Their promo lists them as ”Sweden’s answer to Suicide Silence”, but with all the will in the world I can’t see that. Suicide Silence is tons more brutal, tons more pounding and tons more heavy. The only similarity is that both have this ‘cory undertone, though one more than the other. Rather, I’d call this band Sweden’s answer to elevator music. Their music would make waiting in an elevator a lot more pleasant. But can they be much more than that?

All fuckin’ about aside. Sort by Title, original and unrevealing name, delivers its debut EP with Independent Process, original and unrevealing title. It looks next to nothing like Suicide Silence, but I really don’t think that matters. World would be a boring place if all bands sounded like Suicide Silence. So thankfully Sort by Title deliver something that sounds their own, though their influences are distinguishable.

A Plea For Purging – The Life

Tue, 13/09/2011

So the recent article on As I Lay Dying brought me to mention A Plea For Purging, a four-piece Metalcore outfit from Nashville, TN. Although Metalcore is often degraded by “tr00 metalheadz”, these guys still do the job for me. This is mostly due to the fact that they mix their music with a healthy dose of Death Metal and keep out any clean singing.

A Plea For Purging recently revealed the first song of their new album called The Life And Death Of A Plea For Purging. This song, which is called The Life, is a somewhat lengthy, but still enjoyable piece of Metalcore. On this album it seems the Death Metal have kind of left the stage, but tend to now and then climb the stage to do some crowd surfing or something.
