It’s been a while since I wrote anything, but it seems to me that I kind of fell out off the Metal-boat for some reason. This morning I listened to Depth’s latest EP which appealed to me, but what really brought me back here was the song Eyez by Rap Metal-legends P.O.D. Earlier this year the guys already released the song On Fire, which came as a total surprise, but this totally shook my balls.
The lyrics take me back to a video, which showed some Black Metal artists commenting on the concept of Christian Black Metal, and one of the guys on there said that he was alright with the idea, only if they would actually scare the hell out of him with the might of God. I can tell you that not many Christian Black Metal bands do that, but P.O.D. here are doing just fine, with a mixture of unforgiven blasphemy, rising dead, guillotines and killing fields.

“Are there bands that sound like Slipknot? Has for long been an unanswered question. However, with the following description, Dropbunny certainly made me think I found the answer: “Ferocious Melbourne seven-piece dropbunny have returned with their highly anticipated second album, “IO”. (…) Continually pushing their musicality to new heights, dropbunny supplement their crushing guitars, mind-bending rhythms and roaring vocals with violins, sitars, xylophones and electronics, including ad-hoc instruments made from rat traps, fish tank motors, and a power saw. This combines to make a furious yet eerie psychotropic landscape that explores the darker side of the human psyche.”

Alright, my Spanish is good enough to decipher de title, but what the hell does this full stop do in the middle of Todo.s? Some hanging out with singer and guitarist Raul got me into the world of Random’s debut album.
The album title can be read as a loop, (todo.s los colores del todo.s los colores del todo…), hence the full stop in the middle of Todo.s. The album is based on the theories of French psychoanalyst Lacan who believed that “the human being, conceived as a totality, is not complete, there will always be a void in him/her.” So, this is why the guys broke the loop after “del”.

Ever heard a Motograter in operation? It’s a self-designed instrument, operated by the American Nu Metal outfit carrying the exact same name. It compounded of a pile of guitar parts and some industrial cable and creates a very deep bass sound, which will become obvious in today’s musical “treat” (whether it will really be a treat will depend on your acceptance to Nu Metal really).
When Rufio suggested we put up this band, he mentioned the band shares vocalist with Five Finger Death Punch, which is one of the many escapades we’ve made outside of the realm of Death Metal in our time and a band whose (early) work we definitely like. Motograter isn’t quite able to match up though: not the stuff we usually play for fun. But still worth a few lines I guess.

On Saturday, October 23, I made the 100+ mile trip from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Atlanta, Georgia to attend the Black Label Berzerkus tour. The tour features Black Label Society, Children of Bodom, Clutch and 2Cents. Zakk Wylde of B.L.S. and Alexi Laiho of C.o.B. are two of my son’s favorite guitarists and since his birthday was the day after the concert the timing couldn’t have been better (or the excuse for me to go!).
Read on for a sample of music from these bands and some of my thoughts on them aswell.

The band Breed 77 formed in London, England at the end of the previous century. If you’re hearing Spanish influences, you’re quite right though, as the band has its roots in Gibraltar and likes to mix in flamenco elements in their solid heavy metal package.
Thanks to AS!

This isn’t Death Metal, but I dig it. Static-X is an American industrial metal band who’ve been busy since 1994. This is the official video for Destroyer off of the Cannibal album.

Byrd36′s post about the demise of Slipknot bass player Paul Gray reminded me of Stone Sour, that other band that frontman Corey Taylor is active in, and the good times I spent listening to them. My undisputed favorite song of theirs is Get Inside. I sought out the uncensored version for you, so cover your ears kids!

The metal community has suffered it’s third loss in just over a month’s time. Slipknot bassist Paul Gray was found dead in a hotel room Monday, May 24, 2010. Here is Surfacing, my favorite song from their self-titled debut, back in ’99 when they were a fresh kick in the ass to the scene. R.I.P. Paul.

Soil is a band I’ve listened to extensively a couple of years ago. Though I’ve posted stuff of them before, Jonas requested the song Breaking Me Down. And who am I not to give it to him? So, here goes.
Thanks to Jonas!
