TesseracT

A tesseract, also called an 8-cell or regular octochoron, is a four-dimensional object, a so-called hyperkubus, the four-dimensional analog of a cube. When you subsequently project it onto a three-dimensional space again – which is like mathematically doing something not even possible – it looks a bit like a cube inside a bigger cube, which then is the band’s logo. Still with me? Further explanation would bring us deep into mathematical territory, so I’ll refrain from doing that, not even so much to spare you a boring read, but simply because this stuff way exceeds my cerebral capacities.

TesseracT – note the capitalized end-T – is also a band, a UK band, from London and the South East of England to be exact. In line with what you’d expect from the above explanation of the mathematical tesseract, their music is progressive, experimental and of mathematical build-up, that’s to say with a certain irregular regularity to the rhythms. There’s order inside of chaos. That sort of idea.

Quoting them on their website, because they’re much better at explaining this than I am: “Tech-heads will often focus on the quintet’s time signatures and musical complexity, but TesseracT are far from an exclusionary exercise in tech metal pomposity. They fully embrace their experimental, prog sensibility without excessive indulgence or pretentiousness; delivering atmospheric, metallic songs that stir strong emotions and evoke powerful mental images. All of which, they argue, is at the core surprisingly simple.” What that says in a lot of fancy words is that they make technical quality stuff that also sounds beautiful.

Formed in 2007, in October of this year the band came out with its debut EP, Concealing Fate, featuring six tracks totaling 27 minutes. Around that time they also got themselves a deal with Century Media, which is also how I got onto their trail: through the CM newsletter. The good news associated with that is that in early 2011 there will be a debut album, which will carry the name One.

At this moment we’ll have to make do with a song called Deception, for which they did a flashy video inside an old factory warehouse or something. Don’t be fooled though, it’s very fuckin’ cool and has pieces in which they seem to bend, fold and screw up time, the same way a tesseract screws up time-space and their music messes about with time signatures. In short: a well thought-out and complete picture! Here goes:

If that tickled your pleasure bone, set yourself in motion towards the band’s official website!
